Intense Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens encouraged to stay indoors as severe gales batter the nation.

Powerful winds reaching speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 households experiencing outages and compelled officials to cancel more than 100 air travel services, based on regional news sources.

The gales are impacting the whole South Island and southern parts of the northern region, as stated by the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have issued infrequent high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in central regions such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been urged to remain inside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for more power and communication outages.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Measures

The power cut is primarily influencing residences mainly in the southern region, while authorities report that energy was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, and trees and electricity poles have been brought down by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was killed after being impacted by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was swept into moving cars on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the city have been suspended as a result of the weather, and certain highways and community centers are also closed.

Simultaneously local leaders have announced a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Labor Protests During Extreme Weather

The powerful gales on Thursday occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "mega strike", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the extreme weather has compelled them to change certain arrangements, with various open-air gatherings moved indoors or abandoned.

Similar gusts are affecting the neighboring country, bringing a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Agencies have declared flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding forest fires.
