McDonald's Removes AI-Generated Christmas Ad After Backlash.
McDonald's has removed a holiday advert created with generative AI after facing considerable public disapproval.
The brief spot was created via AI-generated video and was initially published online for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.
Social Media Criticism and Removal
Soon after it aired, viewers on social media criticized the implementation of AI in the advert. Many labeled it "creepy" and "poorly edited".
"This moment is an key learning as we explore the effective utilization of generative technology," stated a spokesperson from the company.
The advert was produced for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of situations that often go badly during the Christmas break, under the tagline "the worst time of the year".
The Trend of AI-Generated Ads
Campaigns that include generative AI have emerged as a growing phenomenon among prominent companies, especially for the Christmas period.
- Coca-Cola has recently launched back-to-back AI-created holiday commercials.
- Technical Challenges: Because clips produced using generative AI are prone to become unstable the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
- Industry Concerns: The video also provoked worries about the replacement of human roles in the production industry, with some commenters pointing out it could affect work for actors.
Defense from the Production Company
Following the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.
According to her, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then shaped during the edit "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".
"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a finished piece."
Mixed Public Reception
While the McDonald's ad was mostly panned, the response for other AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.
For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly received a significant "positive feedback" from viewers.
However, various brands have likewise faced backlash for employing the technique in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that critics described as "cheap" and "disturbing".
The episode illustrates the ongoing discussion within the marketing and production industries about the balance between technological innovation and audience reception.
