No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
